Final Reflection

Throughout this design principles module, I have learned a lot about the field of design, starting with its fundamental ideas and how I was able to express myself creatively through the creation of my artworks. I study nine design principles throughout the first few weeks by watching the provided lecture videos. The design principles are thoroughly explained and illustrated in each video, which helps me decide what to emphasise when producing an artwork. After learning about design principles and creating five pieces of art, we are assigned Project 1, a self-portrait in which we must creatively convey our thoughts on the characteristics that define us as who we are. Then, in the following week, we moved on to Project 2, which is about a sense of place. I actually enjoyed this project the most as it gives me a chance to explore Malaysia as we need to collect fresh photos reference before creating the final artwork. I decided to portray Malaysia as my sense of place as I just moved here recently to pursue university. For the last and final project, we are required to conduct a visual analysis on the chosen artwork that discusses about SGD10 or also known as 10 reduced inequalities. In this final project, I chose to analyze a piece of art that raises the issue of social prejudice.

In terms of my art and research skills, I can see that I have gradually gotten better as I complete each project assignment. I discovered that I prefer creating artworks digitally because it is a faster process to accomplish this while also having access to an infinite number of artistic features. Apart from the fact that this module is being delivered online, which I appreciate more because it gives me more flexibility in how I organise my time to complete my tasks, almost nothing has changed in my learning process. Overall, I found this module to be interesting to learn because it taught me useful design principles and how to produce effective artwork. I believe that there is nothing much that could be improved in this module as it has been well-arranged for the students to be able to learn engagingly. However, a group task can be utilized to allow the students to socialise with one another while also sharing their creative ideas.
